“Beware of the ides of March” my grandmother would whisper in a dramatic stage whisper and we would giggle – neither did the none’s or the calends impress us.
Beware of the ides of March was the soothsayer told Julius Caesar, and Brutus and his men assassinated Caesar on 15th march 445BC
1848 the Hungarian revolution took place.
1916 saw the abdication of the Russian prince Nickolas the II.
Ides of March or the 15th of March. Actually the entire system has to do with Roman calendar. Romulus the mythical founder of Rome is supposed to have created this complex calendar. Where the month was given 3 reference dates and the other days were counted round it.
- Kalends (1st day of the month)
- Nones (the 7th day in March, May, July, and October; the 5th in the other months)
- Ides (the 15th day in March, May, July, and October; the 13th in the other months)
The remaining, unnamed days of the month were identified by counting backwards from the Kalends, Nones, or the Ides. For example, March 3 would be V Nones—5 days before the Nones (the Roman method of counting days was inclusive; in other words, the Nones would be counted as one of the 5 days).
With the financial year coming to a end it might be a good idea to beware for the year ahead.
May be it is time to look forward to the march madness, that is heralded by St.Patricks’s day two days down the line, or Just celebrate the Harvest season like the Japanese do.
