History channel says that June 15th US of the A celebrates the National history day. Very interesting. Out of curiosity I checked up the National History website. This was their mission statement
The future of democracy depends on an inspired, informed, citizenry. Historic understanding is crucial for this.National history day teaches essential historic literacy that motivates students to secure the future of democracy
The motto is even inspiring,
It’s not just a day its an experience.
One could argue that America is a young nation with no history so they need these.
One could argue that America is a land of immigrants whose memory does not have these so experiencing becoming crucial.
In that case we are accepting that experience is crucial. Which is what our history lesson fails to do.
Curiosity killed the cat, step 2 I ran a check on national history day in India, a blank, Wikipedia talked about overview of indian history, the greatest mention was the August 15th as independence day and 26th january as republic day and they are listed as national holidays
Maybe if we could get to experience history, as written by Indian historians with indian loyalty. Things may change. we may discover our heritage before Gandhi and Nehru.
The history class at school instead of a list of dates to rote, or 45mnts of sleep may become more interesting.
