Enforced disappearances is a harrowing human rights violation, has been used as a tool to spread fear and insecurity within societies globally. Its reach extends beyond the immediate and affects their families, communities and entire nations. This grave issue transcends borders and is no longer confined to military dictatorships, as it has infiltrated modern conflicts and political repression. The international day of the disappeared is observed on 30th August. It reminds us of the countless individuals who have vanished, shedding light on urgent need to combat this heinous practise.
Enforced disappearances have now evolved into a pervasive global crisis, affecting at least 85 countries. Once a hallmark of military dictatorships this atrocity now thrives in complex internal conflict scenarios and is often used to suppress political opponents. this is practised under the guise of counter-terrorism, breaching states obligations, it actually has alarming levels of impunity.
The victims of enforced disappearances suffer unimaginable torment, quite often enduring physical and psychological brutality while living in constant fear. Their families experience a slow mental anguish, unsure of their loved one’s fates. This uncertainty is exacerbated by economic hardships resulting from the disappearances. Women often bear the brunt of these economic consequences, as they become the sole providers. Children are not spared from this horror, as their disappearances not violate their rights to life, but it also often leaves them without identities. Entire communities suffer as bread winners vanish, causing economic strife and social marginalization.
According to the Declaration on the Protection of All Persons from enforced Disappearance, Enforced disappearance occurs when individuals are detained or abducted against their will by government officials or organized groups. It is followed by a refusal to disclose their fate or where abouts, leaving them beyond the protection of the Law.

Enforced disappearances is a sever violation of human rights, infringing upon the right to liberty and security, protection from torture and rights to life when the victim is killed. It also robs individuals of their identity and right to fair trial. Further more it violates economic, social and cultural rights such as right to adequate stand of living and health.
In the legal framework, both the Rome Statute of the international criminal court and International convention for the protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance recognized enforced disappearance as a crime against humanity when a part of wide spread or systematic attack on civilians. This designation removes any statue of limitations and grants victims’ families the right to seek reparations and demand the truth.
The United Nations General Assembly established the international Day the Victims of Enforced Disappearances on August 30th 2011. This move was prompted by growing concerns about the surge in enforced disappearances related to human rights abuses worldwide. The Assembly welcomed the International Convention for the Protection of All persons from Enforced Disappearances and aimed to draw attention to this pressing issue.
The International Day of the Disappeared reminds us that enforced disappearance continue to afflict societies globally to the day. it underscores the urgency of addressing this grave human rights violation and reaffirms the commitment to the international community to fight impunity and protect the rights of all individuals regardless of their circumstances.
