Touch – healing our bodies.

I remember my niece talking to my father who was battling cancer. She was reassuring him with all the wisdom that only a 3 year old could have.”amma, will hug you and you will be better.” There is something about  incorporating human touch in our everyday lives. It is vital to our emotional and physical self.

There is a kannada poem that asks

, “ಎನಿದೇನಿದು ತೇಲುಗಣ್ಣಿನ ಮೇಲು ನೋಟದ ಸೂಚನೆ?

ಯಾವ ಸುಮದುರ ಯಾತನೆ?ಯಾವ ದಿವ್ಯದ ಯಾಚನೆ?”

that is why are the eyes looking at a distance horizon?  Which divinity calls you. Many of us have experienced this great focus on our spiritual lives that we overlook the wonders of being present in our physical form.  But our physical bodies are important in terms of our personal growth.

Despite of having an early childhood, were touch was looked down up, “muttu beda” or don’t touch. Don’t carry a child it will get used to being carried I realized that touch, particularly human touch is loving, comforting and allows us to access the part of ourselves that yearns for a sense of oneness with the world around us. even simple of touch connect us not just to our bodies but also to the energetic presence of other people. Like Richelle E.Goodrich puts, it sometimes all that we can do is hug a friend tightly and wish that their pain could be transferred by touch to your emotional hard drive.

There are so many ways to incorporate touch in our daily lives, one of the easiest is a heartfelt embrace. It is a way to really feel our energy pass between each other and strengthen the bonds that keep us together. Hugs  are a way of healing hurts, for it tells us, no matter what happens to us, we have someone in our lives who supports us and cares for us.

One of the family that I know has a tradition where the elders of the family massage the younger one’s head every night before going to bed, and the younger ones massage the feet/back of the elders. This is a form of nourishing touch. Somehow we are brought up to believe that massage is a luxury, but actually it is an ancient form of healing. It opens up pathways to receive unlimited energy from the universe. it does not matter  whether  a simple message comes from a loved one, or a massage therapist but  by giving ourselves the gift of massage every once in a while we are doing something healthy and beneficial for our bodies. Massage helps our bodies activate their own restorative powers creating a wonderful way t engage fully in our own healing.

At times I am convinced that touch has a memory, letting ourselves take advantage of the healing nature of touch creates space where we can truly live and in experience the world through our bodies. Allowing us to completely immerse ourselves in the loving sense of joy and wonder that is our life.
