Often, I wondered why the movie Bhagban irritated me so, there were many things but two things that stood out was the identity of Hemamalini… one does not remember her name in the movie I think it was Pooja or something her only place in the narrative is as a wife and mother. That is for another day, more irritating is the self-righteous attitude of the protagonist essayed by Mr. Amitabh Bachchan.
He calls his sons his investment saying that they will look after him and wife in their old age… he is offended that his sons are focused on their families. Most viewers were made to realize about how ungrateful the kids were… but not once did either a critic or anywhere in the story did the fact that the character essayed by Mr. Bachchan was selfish voiced.
I remember a fable that my grandmother used to narrate to us, where a father carried his son across a flooded river. The son told the father ‘When I’m older I will carry you across this river as you now do for me.” “No, you won’t” was the father’s reply. When you are older you will have your own concerns. All I expect is that one day you will carry your own son across this river as I do for you now. “
Deeds are often done with the exchange in mind, or obligation to retrieve but paying it forward is what the universe really functions on. When I give a lift to the elderly woman down the road, I don’t expect her to pay me for the person who gave me the lift when I needed it has already paid for her. The blessing she gives me is something over and above.
Paying forward is not about money its about deeds, about kindness it is about being grateful to the help the universe delivered to us when we didn’t deserve it. Its not for us to criticize, reject or judge, our purpose is to offer a helping hand, compassion and mercy. We just help others they way we would like to be helped.
Just take a minute today and do something for someone without expecting anything in return. You realize that you are paying forward, or possible closing a forward from the universe.
Stay blessed.
