Distracting the Distraction

Emerging from the Labyrinth to Find Focus.

Ah, my dear chum, let me regale you with a tale of my past three decades, a merry dance of distraction and misadventure amidst the labyrinth of life’s appointments and commitments. Picture if you will, a soul adrift in the vast sea of psycho-somatic ponderings, unable to tether oneself to the task at hand.

For thirty long years, I’ve been a wanderer in the desert of focus, missing vital appointments like ships passing silently in the night. Oh, the trials and tribulations of parenthood, with lunch preparations and household logistics becoming my Sisyphean bane. One misstep, and the specter of unpleasantness would rear its ghastly head.

But hark! ‘Twas not the fault of external distractions, nay, I was the architect of my own folly. Thirst, fatigue, or the siren call of a nearby tome would whisk me away from my intended course, leaving me stranded in the tempest of my own making.

‘Twas a revelation that struck me like a bolt from the blue! Startled, I’d drop whatever I held at the mere sound of a voice intruding upon my reverie. My focus was unwavering, yes, but alas, directed towards the wrong quarry.

Let us journey back to a time when we roamed as hunter-gatherers, learning through play and toil alike. Alas, modernity hath stripped us of such primal pursuits, leaving naught but the drudgery of daily existence in its wake.

But fear not, for I stumbled upon a remedy amidst the chaos! With the aid of an IVEI board, I laid bare my commitments, each patient appointment etched upon its pristine surface. Yet, a pothole lay in wait, unseen until now – the necessity of perusing patient histories ere planning treatment.

Thus, armed with newfound clarity, I devised a stratagem to tame the unruly tempest of distraction. Setting my timer for forty-five minutes, I’d jot down the myriad projects and ideas clamoring for attention, then pluck one from the jar of fate and toil upon it with singular focus.

Ah, those halcyon days before the siren song of Facebook and Instagram! Now, my phone lies silent, a mere relic of distraction in my quest for deep work. Even the mundane task of checking emails is relegated to a designated time slot upon my calendar.

And lo, in the annals of literature, I stumbled upon a tome of great wisdom – “Deep Work” by the venerable Cal Newport. A tome penned by a man of scholarly renown, yet no mere workaholic. Nay, he embodies the essence of focus, erecting a veritable fortress of concentration in the face of distraction.

In conclusion, my dear friend, let me impart unto thee the fruits of my laborious odyssey:

  1. Earmark thy appointments with care.
  2. Chronicle the tasks of import for the day.
  3. Prioritize them with judicious consideration.
  4. Set thy timer for forty-five minutes.
  5. Engage in total immersion upon the chosen task.
  6. Take respite with a leisurely stroll and a sip of water.
  7. Rinse and repeat.

‘Tis a strategy that hath served me well, and perchance may serve thee likewise. Go forth, my friend, and reclaim thy focus amidst the clamor of modernity!

Achieving focus in life is probably my life’s purpose. I’m walking the path, hope to reach the place you now write from.
Also, dear God, I love the way you write! It feels like someone’s singing to me. 😂
