August Ambience Ends.

Round and About the End of August

As the calendar prepares to turn its page, Emperor Augustus can now rest in peace for another year—having lent his imperial name to thirty-one rather eccentric days before packing his bags and making for the exit. It has been a curious month, wandering between celestial alignments, psychological boundary disputes, and the irresistible temptation of steamed monsoon treats.

First came the so-called Lion’s Gate Portal on the eighth of the eighth. In these modern times of instant enlightenment, people treat cosmic portals rather like vending machines—drop in a coin and out pops a brand-new destiny. But turn the figure eight on its side and you simply get the quiet infinity of balance: balancing past with future, hustle with stillness, and discovering that the weaver of the web is none other than oneself.

Then we observed National Forgiveness Month, which many of us endure with the passive politeness of a potted plant in a municipal corridor. Real forgiveness, of course, is not about forgetting; it is simply switching off the emotional metre. The inner litigant demanding dramatic cosmic justice can finally rest when we stop rehearsing our arguments and sit quietly in the clean space of nothing at all.

There was also Psoriasis Awareness, a gentle reminder that our skin is not merely decorative upholstery. It is the frontier where the nervous system sends its telegrams when one is thoroughly burnt out. To itch may be human, and to scratch temporarily sublime, but the real antidote is a little subconscious gentleness and somatic grounding.

As for What’s Your Legacy Month, old Augustus may have preferred grand imperial monuments, but one need not plan equestrian statues or marble plaques. Your legacy is never what you leave for people, but what you leave inside them—a slightly messy mosaic held together with goodwill, a kind gesture with a neighbour’s shopping, and the memory of how you made someone feel.

Meanwhile, Onam and the monsoon gave us the irreplaceable scent of Patoli. Rice flour and sweet coconut-jaggery wrapped inside fresh turmeric leaves and steamed to perfection. Lift the lid, catch that earthy aroma, and you are instantly transported back to a rain-soaked childhood kitchen where all was safe and sound.

Which brings us to Happiness Happens Month. Joy does not arrive with the blare of a Roman triumph, a brass band, or a high-speed soft-drink advertisement. It slips in quietly:

  • An unhurried stroll in the evening breeze
  • A cup of warm tea shared with someone who leaves their pedestal at the door
  • The quiet sweet comfort of hot Patoli while it pours outside
  • Listening to the softest murmur in a room full of chatter

Augustus can now rest in peace for another year, and as for the rest of us: if you are happily unhappy with your familiar grievances, so be it—we shall not disturb your comfortable gloom. But if you fancy a bit of an adventure to discover how happiness actually works, do join us on next month’s podcast.

Pull up a chair, tune in, and let us explore the quiet art of recognizing joy:
