World Humanitarian Day
I sit in mortal peril, that I might receive a happy humanitarian day message or some SMS greeting me happy humanitarian day, or some humanitarian event!!
Before I pass judgements, I decided to see what exactly the word humanitarian mean. Well the dictionary defines a humanitarian as a person who makes others lives better.
And The World Humanitarian Day was a dedicated to recognize humanitarian personnel and those who have lost their lives working for humanitarian cause. This was designated as part of the United Nations General Assembly; the day August 19th was chosen as it marks the day Sergio Vieira De Mello the representative of the UN Secretary-General to Iraq and 21 of his colleagues were killed by the bombing of the UN Headquarters in Baghdad.
The world Humanitarian Day is the time to recognize the people who face danger and adversity in order to help others. It is also the time to celebrate the spirit that inspires humanitarian work round the globe. This year the UN and its humanitarian partners invite us to inspire world’s humanity. The invite is to take an important social action on this day and share it on our social network and amplify the message. If you do want to get involved and learn more please visit www.worldhumanitarianday.org
The day also is meant to draw attention to humanitarian needs worldwide and the importance of international cooperation in meeting these needs. Each year millions of people suffer due to disasters either natural or manmade, UN Humanitarian aid is about life saving assistance and help to rehabilitate the disaster effected community irrespective of social group, religion, sex, race or any divide.
The founding principle of the Humanitarian aid includes humanity, impartiality, neutrality and independence. Responding to emergencies is one aspect of humanitarian work and the people affected by disaster are often the first to help their own communities following a disaster.
The major humanitarian work pops up post crisis management. That is rebuilding lives after disaster such the community becomes more resilient to future crisis. To advocate for their voices to be heard and to build lasting and sustainable peace in the areas of conflict.
Thinking about it, we can all make a difference in the lives of others in need, because it is the most simple of gestures that make the most significant differences. Humanitarian logistics is about mobilization and movement of resources for disaster preparedness, disaster response and disaster recover.
On a very personal level, if we could make a rule that wherever we are , whenever we can, we will try to act a little kinder than necessary the world would be a better place. Being Humane manifests in small random acts of kindness, and being respectful of others
At the end of the day Humanitarian work like Lord Baden Powell said is about, leaving the world a better place than which we found it.
Just leaving you with a thought — Justice not charity, solidarity not pity, opportunity not handouts.”
