one of those trips to Manipal and here I was in the bus, knowning I had to sit for the next 6 hrs. and from my window the mangroves are visible. I see these amazing garbage bags swinging like pendulums from the tall tree. Here I am admiring the inguenity of the bags being placed on a tree top…one of the bags enlarges horizontally and begins to float as if it was a bat flying blonk… it hit me that it was indeed a bat….

I had always associated bats with dark, enclosed places bright afternoon from a tree top well it was a lesson that my biology teacher Indira Rao forgot to impart or I forgot to assimilate.  When I arrived home, my friend who runs a center Inner Light told me of her current dreams with bats!!

scientifically bats belong to the order:         Chiroptera: Bats, with their remarkable ability to fly, are classified within the order Chiroptera, deriving from the Greek words “cheir” (meaning “hand”) and “pteron” (meaning “wing”), highlighting their unique wing structure. This order encompasses all bat species, comprising about 20% of all classified mammal species globally. Bats are further categorized into two suborders: Yinpterochiroptera and Yangochiroptera.

Megabats and Microbats: Traditionally, bats were divided into megabats, primarily fruit-eating species, and microbats, which use echolocation and have diverse diets. Recent evidence supports a more nuanced classification, grouping megabats and certain microbat species under Yinpterochiroptera and additional microbat species under Yangochiroptera.

Ecological Importance: Bats play vital roles in ecosystems by pollinating flowers, dispersing seeds, and controlling insect populations, thus contributing to forest regeneration and reducing the need for pesticides. Additionally, bat guano has been utilized as fertilizer, showcasing their direct benefits to humans.

Nocturnal Behavior and Roosting: Most bats are nocturnal and roost in caves, trees, or other refuges, possibly to evade predators.

Global Distribution: Bats inhabit various regions worldwide, except for extremely cold areas, and their mobility allows them to spread diseases among themselves, necessitating caution when interacting with them due to their potential as disease reservoirs.

Goddess Lakshmi and bats: In Hindu mythology, bats are often associated with the goddess of wealth and prosperity, Lakshmi. This symbolic connection reflects shared attributes such as community, longevity, balance, and supernatural powers.
