Jammadharni

an unorganized unacknowledged strata of our society

Jammadharini is the word for The sanitary worker,

Definitely deserve more credit than what they are given.

8hrs of toiling on the street, rude curses from people when the stretch is not done. They are unskilled labourers many a times on contract, their pay is pittance. The cleaning is informally outsourced by the government office to labour contractors. Both the outsourcing officers and the labour contractor pick up their commissions.

The work is such that we the inheritors of a great tradition and the true followers of Uncle Sam have imbibed within us the worst of the two cultures so we through plastic bags, spit on the road, and expect these people to clean it up.

We even have the audacity to cluck at their inefficiency now you know where the prototype of the cruel mother-in-law has evolved.

It our apathy and lack of discipline that drives them to go slack on their efficiency.

We tip them like we heard the Brits used to do, give them a measly diwali gift sometimes handout our leftovers and old clothes to abdicate our responsibility.

I would say we need say”jaago naagareek jago” instead of “jaago grahak jaago.”
